OASW Celebrates Pride Month and Acknowledges an Ongoing Commitment to the 2SLGBTQ+ Community

OASW Logo in Pride Rainbow ColoursPride Month is a time to celebrate and honour the strength, vibrancy and diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Raising the Pride flag is a recognition of the unique identities that exist within our communities and is a celebration of individuality and the freedom and right to self-expression. During this year’s Pride Month, OASW is proud to stand in solidarity with and recognize how essential our 2SLGBTQ+ social workers are to the well-being of our communities and our profession across the province.

We acknowledge the perseverance of dedicated activists, including our members, whose work has led to significant achievements in the progressive realization of 2SLGBTQ+ rights in Ontario. The history of the movement continues to be written with each new flag raised. We support our partners who have worked tirelessly to build and protect safe spaces in our institutions and communities.

While Pride is a time for rejoicing and celebration of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, it is also a time to acknowledge that we must continue to challenge oppressive practices and advocate against hate crimes, inequities in access to care and continued discrimination. The reality is that there is still significant work ahead to ensure dignity, respect and the breaking down of barriers for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals to live safely in our communities.

This month signals an opportunity for OASW to acknowledge a long overdue affirmation of our commitment to standing in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community. OASW commits to ongoing action that leads to constructive and meaningful change. We will continue to raise awareness, share knowledge, and build the skills of Ontario’s social workers to provide safe and competent care to the 2SLGBTQ+ community through professional development and the ongoing integration of equity in our work. We look forward to deeper engagement with our members on this essential work.

We wish everyone a happy Pride Month and we honour all of our colleagues who work tirelessly to help advance 2SLGBTQ+ rights as human rights, by taking bold action to change harmful social and political environments and build a more inclusive society.
