Annual General Meeting 2019

"Social Work Practice in a Digital World: Professional Identities, Ethics, and Opportunities"

GUEST SPEAKER

Dr. Lauren McInroy

The rapid spread of digital technologies constitutes a monumental shift in contemporary culture - one which necessitates a proactive response by social workers and social service organizations. This presentation will provide key considerations and practical strategies for negotiating the potential overlap between professional and personal identities online, as well as navigating professional ethics related to technology in a variety of practice settings. Current opportunities for effectively integrating technology into face-to-face practice at multiple levels and emerging opportunities for digital practice contexts will also be explored.

Dr. Lauren McInroy is an Assistant Professor in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University. She earned her MSW (2011) and PhD (2018) at the University of Toronto. Dr. McInroy's research investigates the impacts of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on the well-being of marginalized adolescents and emerging adults in Canada and the United States - particularly LGBTQ+ youth. She explores how LGBTQ+ youth build communities of support, engage in identity development activities, foster resilience and well-being, and engage in advocacy using digital technologies.
