The Beads and Stories that Bind: Engaging in the Art of Reconciliation
Artist Talk with Katie Longboat

Tuesday, June 28, 2022 | 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. | Online | OASW Member Exclusive

In the context of truth and reconciliation, art has an innate power to deepen understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and further important dialogue on our shared history.

Driven by our commitment to advancing meaningful dialogue and action on reconciliation, OASW has embarked on a collaboration with Katie Longboat, a Mohawk and Cree beadwork artist originally from Six Nations of the Grand River, to create a series of original pieces of beaded artwork. Inspired by the concept of “moving forward together” and OASW’s values of equity integration, these pieces are intended to serve as an enduring visual reminder and catalyst for critical reflection and conversation on the importance of truth and reconciliation and our ongoing personal and professional journeys towards this goal.

Join us in conversation with Katie for an exclusive virtual exhibition of her work with OASW. Hear from Katie as she reflects on her work, identity and artistic vision, including the meaning behind beadwork and its connection to mental health, healing and wellness. Next, Katie will introduce the custom beadwork that she worked with OASW to envision and create, exploring the intention and message behind the work, and leading an interactive dialogue on what it means to her, to OASW and our members.

Please note that this free online event is open to OASW members only.
